Once at Hard Rock Bombay Dyeing Mills, half the Indian team walked in for an IPL after party. Group had some really big names, including the best fast bowlers. They had a great time with girls literally throwing themselves on them including lap dances in their booth. This was 2008-2009 types.
My office used to be in the Bombay Dyeing Mill Compund where Bastian is also located. Used to be packed around 10 pm onwards. We used to leave around that time and see a variety of luxury cars rolling in the compound. So it is doing well.

The former mill land, particularly in prime Mumbai locations like Worli, has proven to be exceptionally valuable, with recent sales reaching billions of rupees. This high valuation has enabled the company to strategically pivot towards real estate development, generating substantial revenue, significantly reducing debt, and strengthening its financial position. The company has sold large parcels of land to major developers, indicating a successful transition from textiles to real estate.

The mill compound carries a rich historical legacy, with its alleys being the birthplace of local culinary staples like Vada Pav, and each brick seemingly holding stories from its industrial past.

Where residents want improvements
Many MHADA flats, particularly those for mill workers and those resulting from slum rehabilitation, are criticized for poor construction quality (e.g., debris in walls) and ongoing maintenance issues. These include frequent water shortages, non-functional lifts, rat infestations, garbage problems, and a general lack of hygiene. Residents often report feeling unsafe due to the surrounding environment and the behavior of some neighbors, with some buildings being in a dangerous structural state.
The mhada near my area has water shortage issues
In 2019 the MHADA flat I rented got water in the main lines only 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening. The Flat did not have a freaking loft storage tank !!!
ICC towers riddle with multiple issues-falling glass facdae, get only 20% of entire water need from BMC
Most of the Mhada's and SRA buildings are neglected after it's built. There will be 'addas' below the building where random unemployed men would drink, party and create chaos.
Exposing #Mhada below is one of the flat from Mumbai's Wadala Bombay Dyeing Mill workers flat constructed by @mhadaofficial look what's found in the walls of the Flat. CARRY BAGS! Really is this quality of the work #Mhada does from its contracters? should people pay for this?1/5
In the place we lived, the lifts didn’t work, water wasn’t available 24 hours, and it felt very unsafe because of the type of people in the society who were from a local village nearby. We could hear about something being robbed almost every day from the neighbors.
The construction is very very very old and in a extremely dangerous state right now with structural cracks so open that it scares me when I visit them. They can’t actively use 1 part of the house because the ceiling there has collapsed twice.

Residents in the MHADA colonies within the mill compound area frequently complain about excessive noise pollution from loud music and firecrackers late into the night, often past legal hours. There are also reports of illegal activities like cricket matches blocking roads, and a perceived lack of effective intervention from local police despite repeated complaints.

Despite owning valuable land parcels and having a strong brand history, the company is perceived by some as an "under-achiever" in the real estate sector, failing to compete effectively with major developers. There's a recurring sentiment, often expressed through wordplay like "Bombay Dyeing" becoming "Mumbai Dying," that reflects a broader concern about the city's perceived decline or the company's diminishing fortunes.
When they named it Mumbai, I saw it coming. Bombay dyeing. #bombay #mumbai
From Bombay Dyeing to Mumbai dying
Bombay Dyeing is a bigger under-achiever. For its brand strength and land parcels, it should have been competing with the likes of Godrej
There used to be a brand Bombay Dyeing now there is a new brand, it is Mumbai Dying.

The historical transition from textile mills to modern developments in Mumbai's mill lands is marred by a legacy of injustice towards former mill workers. Mass layoffs in the 1980s, coupled with allegations that workers were denied their fair share of the land's escalating value, have created a sense of betrayal. The "cosmopolitan culture" that emerged from these redevelopments is seen by some as built upon these historical inequities.
The jobs shifted to other parts of Maharashtra. These mill jobs were low paying and low skill jobs which couldn't be sustained in Mumbai anymore.
The whole cosmopolitan culture has been built on injustice.
There seems to be a curse on that entire Lower Parel-Elphinstone Road mills stretch. I think hardworking mill workers laid off in 1980s are still demanding their fair share from the Jhaveris, Shahs, Sanghvis, Memons, and people whose surname end with "Wala" who got rich by selling factories as scrap to builders and thus sabotages Manufacturing industry of Bombay.

The project has encountered various legal and regulatory hurdles. This includes unfavorable Bombay High Court rulings that mandated the company to surrender significant portions of its mill land to municipal authorities for public use. Additionally, the company has faced tax demands and issues with occupancy certificates for its projects.

The company's promoters have a reputation for being "shareholder unfriendly," which could be a concern for investors despite the company's valuable assets.
Promoters are sweet and salty both, while they are known to be shareholder unfriendly the credit rating of the co. Is largely because of its promoter pedigree
